FROM EARLIER EDITIONS

About Our Ordine al Merito Award Winner A thirty-five year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who retired with rank of Chief Superintendent, Ben Soave has been decorated by the Canadian and foreign governments for his outstanding achievements in the fight against organized crime and terrorism. Mr. Soave, who joined the RCMP in 1970, spent more than fifteen years in foreign service (from 1979 to 1996), acting as the RCMP Liaison Officer and Attaché at Canadian Missions in Singapore, Lima, and Rome, with responsibilities for high-risk regions in South East Asia, South America, Europe and the Middle East.

In 1996 he returned to Canada and assumed command of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) in Toronto, an elite organization that targets the highest levels of internationally organized crime. Under his leadership, the CFSEU exposed and dismantled one of the most notorious branches of the Sicilian Mafia, a crime group that had frustrated law enforcement efforts on three continents for decades. From 2001 until his retirement, Ben was also responsible for the Toronto based Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), created in the aftermath of 9-11, to investigate, disrupt, and expose criminal extremist groups, ultimately to prevent terrorist attacks.

Mr. Soave is active in a wide variety of community and charitable events and is a strong advocate of interaction and consultation with communities at risk. He is much in demand, both domestically and internationally, as a speaker, regarding the threat posed by organized crime and criminal extremism. He is a member of the Executive Advisory Committee for the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators (ACFI); member of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP); a Director and Treasurer of the Universal Youth Foundation, a registered not-for-profit organization which provides educational assistance to children in Africa and developing countries; a Director of the Villa Charities, a registered not-for-profit organization providing long term care facilities for seniors; and president of Soave Strategy Group Inc.

Chief Superintendent (Retired) Ben Soave was invested by the Governor-General of Canada as an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, and in 2000 the President of the Republic of Italy proclaimed him a "Knight Officer of the Order of Merit". He has also been awarded two personal RCMP Commissioner’s Commendations, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal, the RCMP Long Service Medal, and numerous community and professional organizations’ awards.

About Our Young Achievement Award Winner On November 18, Nicole Corriero will receive the NCIC – TD’s Young Achievement Award, and a quick look at just the highlights of her resume give an excellent indication of why she is our honouree. A cum laude graduate of Harvard University in 2005, with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, she is now a candidate for both a Doctor of Jurisprudence (from the Un iversity of Detroit’s Mercy Faculty of Law), and a Bachelor of Legal Letters (from the University of Windsor). While at Harvard, she received Magna honours for her senior thesis on the sociology of fist fights in hockey. And that’s just her academic record!

Nicole was for four years a member of the varsity women’s hockey team at Harvard, and from 2004 to 2005, its captain. Her excellence as an athlete is doubly reflected in her receipt of the Mary Paget Prize, awarded to a Harvard senior for outstanding contribution to female athletics at Harvard; and in the Sarah Devens Award, presented to the New England hockey player demonstrating leadership and commitment both on and off the ice; and in thirteen other awards and distinctions she has earned in her athletic career. And that’s not all…

Nicole has served as a grade school tutor, as co-chair of the Harvard-Radcliffe College Foundation for Women’s Athletics, as a lector at St. Paul’s Church, and as a volunteer at both the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Homeless Shelter. Currently she is a volunteer with Windsor Community Legal Aid, a member of the American and Ontario Trial Lawyers’ Associations, and of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.

Join us on November 18 (see above) when we honour this outstanding young women for her many achievements to date, and the promise she hold for many future distinctions in the years ahead.
