[i]This conference focuses on migration as a specific strategy developed by EU citizens to adjust to an adverse socio-economic environment. In particular, we look at the mobility of EU citizens proceeding from Southern European Member States (Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain) who move to Northern European Member States (Belgium, France, United Kingdom). Our objective with this conference is twofold. First, we examine the socio-economic context within which these new migration flows emerge and identify the scale and nature of this new emigration and its integration in Northern European destination countries. This is achieved through a quantitative analysis of the most recent data on flows and profiles of this new labour force using sending and receiving countries databases (Labour force survey, census, migration office data…). Second, we are looking at the politics and policies of EU mobility both from the perspective of the sending nations (who have been speculating on the impact of this loss of labour force and on the proper policy response to adopt) and the receiving nations (who have had mixed attitudes towards this new influx of EU citizens). Our analysis of policies and debates about these new flows will thus underscore the increasing contentiousness of the issue of intra-EU mobility.[/i]

Cette conférence scientifique s’intéresse aux flux migratoires du Sud vers le Nord de l’Europe qui se sont produits depuis le début de la crise économique et financière. A travers la présentations de 4 cas d’études de pays d’émission (Portugal, Espagne, Italie et Grèce) et de 4 cas d’études de pays de réception (Royaume-Uni, Belgique, France, Allemagne) nous tâcherons de déterminer le profil de ces nouveaux migrants européens mais aussi d’analyser les réactions politiques que ces nouvelles migrations produisent dans les sociétés d’accueil et d’origine.
