Conflicts around the world are on the rise. According to the United Nations (2023), one-quarter of humanity lives in areas affected by armed conflict. \u00a0The war between Russia and Ukraine, subsidized by NATO countries with the justification of \u2018defending principles\u2019, is leaving behind an estimated one million casualties. The risk of genocide of Palestinians by the Israeli army backed by the global West has been recognized by the International Court of Justice. \u00a0Brutal wars are unfolding in Africa, such as in Sudan, or in the Democratic Republic of Congo, fueled by interests in Africa&#8217;s mineral resources. The \u201cDoomsday Clock of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists\u201d, which quantifies the risks of a nuclear global catastrophe, never recorded a risk as high as today.<\/p>\n<p>Scared by the Russian attack on Ukraine and by the recent repositioning of the United States, Europe feels sidelined and fears that its peace and prosperity could be at risks. Politicians are reacting in a short-sighted manner with a call to mobilize, on a continental scale, a colossal amount of resources to produce more tools of death and destruction. \u00a0On March 4, 2025, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, released the &#8220;ReArm Europe Plan&#8221;, stating that \u201cEurope is ready and able to act with the speed and ambition that is needed. [\u2026] We are in an era of rearmament. And Europe is ready to massively boost its defense spending.\u201d \u00a0The military industry, which has vast resources and powerful influence on politicians and the media, blows on the fire of an openly belligerent narrative. The \u201cfear of Russia\u201d is stirred up as a bogeyman, conveniently ignoring that Russia has a GDP lower than Italy alone. Politicians say, completely unwarrantedly, that Russia has expansionist aims towards Europe, posing a threat to Berlin, Paris and Warsaw, when it has just shown of not been even capable of taking its former satellite, Kiev. War propaganda is always nourished by instigating exaggerated fear. With diplomacy, Europe can go back to its peaceful coexistence and collaboration with Russia that the cursed Ukrainian affair has disrupted.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that peace depends on overpowering the other sides leads only to escalation, and escalation leads to war. \u00a0The Cold War did not become a &#8216;hot&#8217; war and wise politicians from both sides were able to overcome their strong ideological divergences and their respective \u201cquestions of principle\u201d and agree on a dramatic balanced reduction of their respective nuclear armaments. The START nuclear treaties between the USA and the Soviet Union led to the destruction of 80% of the nuclear arsenal on the planet. \u00a0Scientists and intellectuals on both sides played a recognized role in pushing politicians towards a rational de-escalation. In 1955, one of the most prominent philosophers of the 20th century, mathematician, and Nobel Prize winner for literature, Bertrand Russell and Nobel laureate for physics Albert Einstein signed an influential manifesto, and the Pugwash Conference, inspired by it, brough together scientists of both sides, lobbying for de-escalation. \u00a0When Russell, in 1959, was asked to leave a message for posterity, he replied: \u201cIn this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other, we have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don\u2019t like. We can only live together in that way. But if we are to live together, and not die together, we must learn a kind of charity and a kind of tolerance, which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet.\u201d We should hold on to this wise intellectual heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Major conflicts have always been preceded by massive military investments. Since 2009, global military spending has reached unprecedented record levels each year, with 2024 expenditure hitting an all-time high of 2443 billion dollars. The \u201cReArm Europe Plan\u201d commits Europe to invest 800 billion euros in military expenses. \u00a0Both the current President of the USA and the current President of Russia have recently stated they are ready to start talks for normalization of the relations and for balanced military reduction. \u00a0The President of China is repeatedly calling for de-escalation and moving from a confrontational mentality towards a collaborative \u2018win-win\u2019 mentality. This is the direction to go. La militarizzazione improvvisa non preserva la pace; porta alla guerra. I nostri leader politici affermano di essere pronti a combattere per difendere i presunti valori occidentali che ritengono in gioco; sono pronti a difendere il valore universale della vita umana? I conflitti in tutto il mondo sono in aumento. Secondo le Nazioni Unite (2023), un quarto dell&#8217;umanit\u00e0 vive in aree colpite da conflitti armati. La guerra tra Russia e Ucraina, sovvenzionata dai paesi della NATO con la giustificazione della &#8220;difesa dei principi&#8221;, sta lasciando dietro di s\u00e9 circa un milione di vittime. Il rischio di genocidio dei palestinesi da parte dell&#8217;esercito israeliano sostenuto dall&#8217;Occidente globale \u00e8 stato riconosciuto dalla Corte internazionale di giustizia. In Africa, come in Sudan o nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo, si stanno svolgendo guerre brutali, alimentate dagli interessi nelle risorse minerarie africane. I politici stanno reagendo in modo miope con un appello a mobilitare, su scala continentale, una colossale quantit\u00e0 di risorse per produrre pi\u00f9 strumenti di morte e distruzione. Il 4 marzo 2025, la Presidente della Commissione Europea, Ursula von der Leyen, ha pubblicato il &#8220;ReArm Europe Plan&#8221;, affermando che &#8220;l&#8217;Europa \u00e8 pronta e in grado di agire con la velocit\u00e0 e l&#8217;ambizione necessarie. [\u2026] Siamo in un&#8217;era di riarmo. E l&#8217;Europa \u00e8 pronta ad aumentare massicciamente la sua spesa per la difesa&#8221;. L&#8217;industria militare, che ha vaste risorse e una potente influenza su politici e media, soffia sul fuoco di una narrazione apertamente belligerante. La &#8220;paura della Russia&#8221; viene agitata come un uomo nero, ignorando convenientemente che la Russia ha un PIL inferiore alla sola Italia. I politici affermano, del tutto ingiustificatamente, che la Russia ha obiettivi espansionistici verso l&#8217;Europa, rappresentando una minaccia per Berlino, Parigi e Varsavia, quando ha appena dimostrato di non essere stata nemmeno in grado di prendere il suo ex satellite, Kiev. La propaganda di guerra \u00e8 sempre alimentata dall&#8217;istigazione di una paura esagerata. Con la diplomazia, l&#8217;Europa pu\u00f2 tornare alla sua pacifica coesistenza e collaborazione con la Russia che la maledetta vicenda ucraina ha interrotto.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;idea che la pace dipenda dalla sopraffazione delle altre parti porta solo all&#8217;escalation, e l&#8217;escalation porta alla guerra. La Guerra Fredda non \u00e8 diventata una guerra &#8220;calda&#8221; e i politici saggi di entrambe le parti sono stati in grado di superare le loro forti divergenze ideologiche e le rispettive &#8220;questioni di principio&#8221; e concordare su una drastica riduzione equilibrata dei rispettivi armamenti nucleari. I trattati nucleari START tra gli Stati Uniti e l&#8217;Unione Sovietica hanno portato alla distruzione dell&#8217;80% dell&#8217;arsenale nucleare del pianeta. Scienziati e intellettuali di entrambe le parti hanno svolto un ruolo riconosciuto nello spingere i politici verso una de-escalation razionale. Nel 1955, uno dei pi\u00f9 importanti filosofi del XX secolo, matematico e premio Nobel per la letteratura, Bertrand Russell e il premio Nobel per la fisica Albert Einstein hanno firmato un influente manifesto e la Conferenza Pugwash, ispirata da esso, ha riunito scienziati di entrambe le parti, facendo pressioni per la de-escalation. Dovremmo aggrapparci a questa saggia eredit\u00e0 intellettuale.<\/p>\n<p>I grandi conflitti sono sempre stati preceduti da massicci investimenti militari. Dal 2009, la spesa militare globale ha raggiunto livelli record senza precedenti ogni anno, con la spesa del 2024 che ha raggiunto il massimo storico di 2443 miliardi di dollari. Il &#8220;ReArm Europe Plan&#8221; impegna l&#8217;Europa a investire 800 miliardi di euro in spese militari. Sia l&#8217;attuale Presidente degli USA che l&#8217;attuale Presidente della Russia hanno recentemente dichiarato di essere pronti ad avviare colloqui per la normalizzazione delle relazioni e per una riduzione militare equilibrata. Il Presidente della Cina chiede ripetutamente la de-escalation e il passaggio da una mentalit\u00e0 conflittuale a una mentalit\u00e0 collaborativa &#8220;win-win&#8221;. Questa \u00e8 la direzione da seguire. E ora l&#8217;Europa si prepara alla guerra, con nuove spese militari pianificate mai viste dalla Seconda guerra mondiale. L&#8217;Europa \u00e8 ora disposta a scuotere le spade perch\u00e9 si sente esclusa?<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;umanit\u00e0 affronta enormi sfide globali: cambiamenti climatici, carestia nel Sud del mondo, la pi\u00f9 grande disuguaglianza economica di sempre, crescenti rischi di pandemie, guerra nucleare.
