Fra i fenomeni pi\u00f9 preoccupanti dei nostri tempi emerge quello relativo alla fondazione, nel nuovo stato di Israele, del Partito della Libert\u00e0 (Tnuat Haherut), un partito politico che nella organizzazione, nei metodi, nella filosofia politica e nell’azione sociale appare strettamente affine ai partiti Nazista e Fascista. <\/p>\n
E’ stato fondato fuori dall’assemblea e come evoluzione del precedente Irgun Zvai Leumi, una organizzazione terroristica, sciovinista, di destra della Palestina. <\/p>\n
L’odierna visita di Menachem Begin, capo del partito, negli USA \u00e8 stata fatta con il calcolo di dare l’impressione che l’America sostenga il partito nelle prossime elezioni israeliane, e per cementare i legami politici con elementi sionisti conservativi americani. <\/p>\n
Parecchi americani con una reputazione nazionale hanno inviato il loro saluto. E’ inconcepibile che coloro che si oppongono al fascismo nel mondo, a meno che non sia stati opportunamente informati sulle azioni effettuate e sui progetti del Sig. Begin, possano aver aggiunto il proprio nome per sostenere il movimento da lui rappresentato. <\/p>\n
Prima che si arrechi un danno irreparabile attraverso contributi finanziari, manifestazioni pubbliche a favore di Begin, e alla creazione di una immagine di sostegno americano ad elementi fascisti in Israele, il pubblico americano deve essere informato delle azioni e degli obiettivi del Sig. Begin e del suo movimento. <\/p>\n
Le confessioni pubbliche del sig. Begin non sono utili per capire il suo vero carattere. Oggi parla di libert\u00e0, democrazia e anti-imperialismo, mentre fino ad ora ha apertamente predicato la dottrina dello stato Fascista. <\/p>\n
E’ nelle sue azioni che il partito terrorista tradisce il suo reale carattere, dalle sue azioni passate noi possiamo giudicare ci\u00f2 che far\u00e0 nel futuro. <\/p>\n
Attacco a un villaggio arabo <\/p>\n
Un esempio scioccante \u00e8 stato il loro comportamento nel villaggio Arabo di Deir Yassin. Questo villaggio, fuori dalle strade di comunicazione e circondato da terre appartenenti agli Ebrei, non aveva preso parte alla guerra, anzi aveva allontanato bande di arabi che lo volevano utilizzare come una loro base. Il 9 Aprile, bande di terroristi attaccarono questo pacifico villaggio, che non era un obiettivo militare, uccidendo la maggior parte dei suoi abitanti (240 tra uomini, donne e bambini) e trasportando alcuni di loro come trofei vivi in una parata per le strade di Gerusalemme. <\/p>\n
La maggior parte della comunit\u00e0 ebraica rimase terrificata dal gesto e l’Agenzia Ebraica mand\u00f2 le proprie scuse al Re Abdullah della Trans-Giordania. Ma i terroristi, invece di vergognarsi del loro atto, si vantarono del massacro, lo pubblicizzarono e invitarono tutti i corrispondenti stranieri presenti nel paese a vedere i mucchi di cadaveri e la totale devastazione a Deir Yassin. <\/p>\n
L’accaduto di Deir Yassin esemplifica il carattere e le azioni del Partito della Libert\u00e0. All’interno della comunit\u00e0 ebraica hanno predicato un misto di ultranazionalismo, misticismo religioso e superiorit\u00e0 razziale. <\/p>\n
Come altri partiti fascisti sono stati impiegati per interrompere gli scioperi e per la distruzione delle unioni sindacali libere. Al loro posto hanno proposto unioni corporative sul modello fascista italiano. <\/p>\n
Durante gli ultimi anni di sporadica violenza anti-britannica, i gruppi IZL e Stern inaugurarono un regno di terrore sulla Comunit\u00e0 Ebraica della Palestina. Gli insegnanti che parlavano male di loro venivano aggrediti, gli adulti che non permettavano ai figli di incontrarsi con loro venivano colpiti in vario modo. <\/p>\n
Con metodi da gangster, pestaggi, distruzione di vetrine, furti su larga scala, i terroristi hanno intimorito la popolazione e riscosso un pesante tributo. La gente del Partito della libert\u00e0 non ha avuto nessun ruolo nelle conquiste costruttive ottenute in Palestina. <\/p>\n
Non hanno reclamato la terra, non hanno costruito insediamenti, ma solo diminuito la attivit\u00e0 di difesa degli Ebrei. I loro sforzi verso l’immigrazione erano tanto pubblicizzati quanto di poco peso e impegnati principalmente nel trasporto dei loro compatrioti fascisti. <\/p>\n
Le discrepanze <\/p>\n
La discrepanza tra le sfacciate affermazioni fatte ora da Begin e il suo partito, e il loro curruculum di azioni svolte nel passato in Palestina non portano il segno di alcun partito politico ordinario. Ci\u00f2 \u00e8, semza ombra di errore, il marchio di un partito Fascista per il quale il terrorismo (contro gli Ebrei, gli Arabi e gli Inglesi) e le false dichiarazioni sono i mezzi e uno stato leader l’obbiettivo. <\/p>\n
Alla luce delle soprascritte considerazioni, \u00e8 imperativo che la verit\u00e0 su Begin e il suo movimento sia resa nota a questo paese. <\/p>\n
E’ maggiormente tragico che i pi\u00f9 alti comandi del Sionismo Americano si siano rifiutati di condurre una campagna contro le attivit\u00e0 di Begin, o addirittura di svelare ai suoi membri i pericoli che deriveranno a Israele sostenendo Begin. <\/p>\n
I sottoscritti infine usano questi mezzi per presentare pubblicamente alcuni fatti salienti che riguardano Begin e il suo partito, e per sollecitare tutti gli sforzi possibili per non sostenere quest’ultima manifestazione di fascismo. <\/p>\n

Parmi les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes politiques les plus inqui\u00e9tants de notre \u00e9poque, il y a dans l’Etat nouvellement cr\u00e9\u00e9 d’Isra\u00ebl, l’apparition du "Parti de la Libert\u00e9" (Tnuat Haherut), un parti politique \u00e9troitement apparent\u00e9 dans son organisation, ses m\u00e9thodes, sa philosophie politique et son appel social aux partis Nazi et fascistes.<\/p>\n
Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9 par les membres et partisans de l’ancien Irgun Zvai Leumi, une organisation terroriste d’Extr\u00e8me-Droite et nationaliste en Palestine.<\/p>\n
La visite actuelle de Menahem Begin, le chef de ce parti, aux Etats-Unis est \u00e9videmment calcul\u00e9e pour donner l’impression d’un soutien am\u00e9ricain \u00e0 son parti lors des prochaines \u00e9lections isra\u00e9liennes, et pour cimenter les liens politiques avec les \u00e9l\u00e9ments Sionistes conservateurs aux Etats-Unis.<\/p>\n
Plusieurs Am\u00e9ricains de r\u00e9putation nationale ont pr\u00eat\u00e9 leurs noms pour accueillir sa visite.<\/p>\n
Il est inconcevable que ceux qui s’opposent au fascisme dans le monde entier, si correctement inform\u00e9s quant au pass\u00e9 et aux perspectives politiques de M. Begin, puissent ajouter leurs noms et soutenir le mouvement qu’il repr\u00e9sente.<\/p>\n
Avant que des dommages irr\u00e9parables ne soient faits par des contributions financi\u00e8res, des manifestations publiques en soutien \u00e0 Begin et avant de donner l’impression en Palestine qu’une grande partie de l’Am\u00e9rique soutient des \u00e9l\u00e9ments fascistes en Israel, le public am\u00e9ricain doit \u00eatre inform\u00e9 sur le pass\u00e9 et les objectifs de M. Begin et de son mouvement.<\/p>\n
Les d\u00e9clarations publiques du parti de Begin ne montrent rien quant \u00e0 leur caract\u00e8re r\u00e9el. Aujourd’hui ils parlent de libert\u00e9, de d\u00e9mocratie et d’anti-imp\u00e9rialisme, alors que jusqu’\u00e0 r\u00e9cemment ils ont pr\u00each\u00e9 ouvertement la doctrine de l’Etat Fasciste.<\/p>\n
C’est dans ses actions que le parti terroriste trahit son v\u00e9ritable caract\u00e8re. De ses actions pass\u00e9es nous pouvons juger ce qu’il pourrait faire \u00e0 l’avenir.<\/p>\n
Attaque d’un village Arabe<\/p>\n
Un exemple choquant f\u00fbt leur comportement dans le village Arabe de Deir Yassine
\nCe village, \u00e0 l’\u00e9cart des routes principales et entour\u00e9 par des terres Juives, n’avait pas pris part \u00e0 la guerre et avait m\u00eame combattu des bandes arabes qui voulaient utiliser comme base le village.<\/p>\n
Le 9 Avril, d’apr\u00e8s le New-York Times, des bandes de terroristes ont attaqu\u00e9 ce village paisible, qui n’\u00e9tait pas un objectif militaire dans le combat, ont tu\u00e9 la plupart de ses habitants – 240 hommes, femmes et enfants – et ont maintenu quelques uns en vie pour les faire d\u00e9filer comme captifs dans les rues de J\u00e9rusalem.<\/p>\n
La majeure partie de la communaut\u00e9 juive a \u00e9t\u00e9 horrifi\u00e9e par cet acte,et l’Agence Juive a envoy\u00e9 un t\u00e9l\u00e9gramme d’excuses au Roi Abdullah de Trans-Jordanie.<\/p>\n
Mais les terroristes, loin d’avoir honte de leurs actes, \u00e9taient fiers de ce massacre, l’ont largement annonc\u00e9 et ont invit\u00e9 tous les correspondants \u00e9trangers pr\u00e9sents dans le pays \u00e0 venir voir les tas de cadavres et les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s \u00e0 Deir Yassin.<\/p>\n
L’incident de Deir Yassin illustre le caract\u00e8re et les actions du Parti de la Libert\u00e9. Au sein de la communaut\u00e9 juive, ils ont pr\u00each\u00e9 un m\u00e9lange d’ultra-nationalisme, de mysticisme religieux et de sup\u00e9riorit\u00e9 raciale.<\/p>\n
Comme d’autres partis fascistes, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9s pour casser les gr\u00e8ves et ont eux-m\u00eame encourag\u00e9 la destruction des syndicats libres. Dans leur Convention, ils ont propos\u00e9 les syndicats de corporation sur le mod\u00e8le fasciste italien.<\/p>\n
Lors des derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de violences sporadiques anti-Britanniques, l’IZL et le groupe Stern ont inaugur\u00e9 le r\u00e8gne de la terreur parmi la communaut\u00e9 juive de Palestine.<\/p>\n
Des professeurs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 battus pour s’\u00eatre exprim\u00e9s contre eux, des adultes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 abattus pour ne pas avoir laiss\u00e9 leurs enfants les rejoindre.<\/p>\n
Par des m\u00e9thodes de gangsters, des tabassages, des bris de fen\u00eatres et des vols largement r\u00e9pandus, les terroristes ont intimid\u00e9 la population et ont exig\u00e9 un lourd tribut.<\/p>\n
Les hommes du Parti de la Libert\u00e9 n’ont pas pris part aux accomplissements constructifs en Palestine. Ils n’ont repris aucune terre, n’ont construit aucune colonie et ont seulement amoindri l’activit\u00e9 de la D\u00e9fense Juive.<\/p>\n
Leurs efforts dans l’immigration, tr\u00e8s divulgu\u00e9s, \u00e9taient minutieux et consacr\u00e9s principalement \u00e0 faire venir des compatriotes fascistes.<\/p>\n
Contradictions<\/p>\n
Les contradictions entre les affirmations "en or" faites actuellement par Begin et son Parti et les rapports de leur performance pass\u00e9e en Palestine donnent l’impression d’un parti politique peu ordinaire.<\/p>\n
C’est la marque indubitable d’un parti fasciste pour qui le terrorisme (contre les Juifs, les Arabes ainsi que les Britanniques) et les fausses d\u00e9clarations sont des moyens, et dont un "Etat Leader" est l’objectif.<\/p>\n
\u00c0 la lumi\u00e8re des observations pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes, il est imp\u00e9ratif que la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 au sujet de M. Begin et de son mouvement soit connue dans ce pays.<\/p>\n
Il est encore plus tragique que la haute direction du Sionisme am\u00e9ricain ait refus\u00e9 de faire campagne contre les efforts de Begin, ou m\u00eame d’exposer \u00e0 ses propres \u00e9l\u00e9ments les dangers pour Israel que repr\u00e9sente le soutien \u00e0 Begin.<\/p>\n
Les soussign\u00e9s prennent donc ces moyens pour pr\u00e9senter publiquement quelques faits frappants au sujet de Begin et de son parti et pour recommander \u00e0 tous ceux qui sont concern\u00e9s de ne pas soutenir cette derni\u00e8re manifestation du fascisme.<\/p>\n

Albert Einstein with many prominent Jews (list below) signed onto this letter published in the NY Times on Dec. 2, 1948<\/p>\n
Qumsiyeh comment\/update: Herut is the precurser for the Likud Party of Israel (following on the ideology of Vladimir Jabotinsky). Begin (a wanted terrorist) later became Israel Prime Minister (Likud) and under his rule, tens of thousands of Lebanese and Palestinian Civilians were killed in the 1980s. Menachem Begin’s successors in Likud (and as Israeli Prime Ministers) include Netanyahu and Sharon who are responsible for countless other civilian deaths. While the authors mention the apology from the Jewish Agency "sent to King Abdullah" who is not even Palestinian, later research shows involvement of the Hagannah and teh Jewish agency in the Deir Yassin massacre as well as JA\/JNF involvement in ethnic cleansing<\/p>\n
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK TIMES:<\/p>\n
Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our time is the Emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the "Freedom Party" (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.<\/p>\n
The current visit of Menahem Begin, leader of this party to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American Support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit. It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin’s political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents. Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin’s behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist lements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and Objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement.<\/p>\n
The public avowals of Begin’s party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.<\/p>\n
Attack on Arab Village<\/p>\n
A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had Taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants – 240 men, women and children – and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan.<\/p>\n
But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Deir Yassin. The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party. Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultra-nationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority.<\/p>\n
Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and Have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their Stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model. During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for Not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute.<\/p>\n
The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.<\/p>\n
DISCREPANCIES SEEN<\/p>\n
The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and His party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a "Leader State" is the goal.<\/p>\n
In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has Refused to campaign against Begin’s efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.<\/p>\n
The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all
\nconcerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.<\/p>\n
